    Participation means showing up.
Belonging means feeling welcomed, respected and valued.

At Equal Play, we believe that true inclusion in sport goes beyond simply opening the door. It is about creating environments where everyone—regardless of their background, culture or experience—feels safe, connected and empowered to take part.

Small actions can make a big difference:
🤝 Learn names and build connections
    🌍 Celebrate diversity
⚽ Encourage teamwork and mutual support
🛡️ Create safe and respectful spaces
    💬 Listen to every voice

Together, we can transform participation into genuine belonging and make sport a place where everyone feels at home.

Equal Play is an Erasmus+ Sport project built on one core belief: when people are genuinely included in sport, everyone wins.
On 24th of July, Turkiye beat China 3-2 in a five-set thriller at VNL 2026. Two of the players who made it happen were born thousands of miles away: one in Cuba, one in Trinidad and Tobago.
Melissa Vargas. Sinead Jack Kısal. Two different journeys, one jersey.
Vargas left Cuba as a refugee, found a home in Turkiye, and went on to break the world serve speed record, win the VNL title, and claim back-to-back European Championship MVP awards. Tonight she scored 35+ points against China.
Kısal built her career across three continents before Turkiye became home. She brought a World Championship silver medal with her and showed up again tonight when it mattered.
This is what inclusive sport looks like in practice. Not a concept, not a policy; two athletes on a court, wearing the same flag, giving everything.

Sport can become a powerful space for inclusion when every player feels respected, heard, and supported.
Inclusive coaching is not about treating everyone the same way, but about creating an environment where different backgrounds, experiences, and needs are welcomed as part of the team.

Small actions such as clear communication, patience, empathy, and positive encouragement can make a real difference in helping people feel safe and involved.

Through Equal Play, we aim to promote more inclusive sport environments where diversity becomes a strength and participation is accessible to everyone.

The Equal Play partnership has officially completed the SELF-AWARENESS TOOL – Common European Report 🌍⚽

The report brings together the results of 414 survey responses collected across 5 European countries — Ireland, Spain, Italy, Lithuania and Türkiye — involving migrants and refugees, host communities, coaches, clubs, NGOs and stakeholders.

The findings confirm a strong shared belief across all partner countries:
Sport is widely recognised as a powerful tool for inclusion, belonging and social connection.

At the same time, the research also highlighted several important challenges that continue to affect participation and inclusion in sport environments, including:
    ✅ Language and communication barriers
    ✅ Transport and accessibility difficulties
    ✅ Financial and structural obstacles
✅ Gaps between inclusion policies and real implementation in practice

The report also underlines the key role of coaches, clubs and organisations in creating safe, respectful and inclusive sport environments. While attitudes towards diversity are generally very positive, the findings show that inclusion requires active, intentional and well-supported practices — not only openness in principle.

Another important conclusion is the need to move from passive inclusion towards more practical and structured approaches, supported by:
    ✔ training and education
    ✔ accessible communication strategies
    ✔ safeguarding and reporting systems
✔ stronger collaboration between organisations and institutions
    ✔ long-term inclusion planning

These findings will now guide the next phase of the project, including the development of Training Pills and Learning Tools designed to provide practical resources for coaches, clubs and sport organisations across Europe.

Together, we continue working towards more inclusive and welcoming sport environments for everyone 💙🇪🇺

This week, the Padel Federation of Ireland hosted a focus group as part of the Equal Play project, bringing together coaches, stakeholders and sport practitioners to explore how we can better support inclusion through sport.👥🏉⚽⛹‍♀

Building on the survey results, the session focused on understanding real experiences, identifying key barriers such as language, access and communication, and discussing practical solutions that can be applied in everyday sport settings.

Participants highlighted the strong potential of sport to create belonging and connection, while also emphasising the need for more structured and practical approaches to inclusion.

The insights gathered will directly contribute to the development of the project’s next outputs, including training resources and tools to support coaches and organisations across Europe.

Together, we continue working towards more inclusive and accessible sport environments for all.
